The Chilean government recognizes nine different indigenous groups that make up approximately 10% of the population. By far the largest of these groups is the Mapuche in south-central Chile. Since the 1990s the Mapuche have been in conflict with the Chilean government over ancestral lands, jurisdictional autonomy, and cultural identity.
