Welcome to Our Chilean Culture Course!

Dear Fellow Chile Travelers,

I have created this blog as a central location for course communication. On this course blog you will find the syllabus for this course including all of the assignments in order.  You can also access each of the sections we will cover on the pages on the right side of this blog. Our course officially begins on December 17, but you can always get a jump on things and complete assignments early.

One of the requirements for this course will be to create your own blog which you will use to complete assignments and to post anything else related to your trip that you would like to share.
Once you have each created your own blogs I will add links to them here so that you can keep up with everyone else's blog.

Also, pay attention to the photos on this blog to see if you recognize these places when you see them in Chile!

Have a great break!

Foods and drinks we might encounter

Today's pre-departure assignment focuses on the food and drinks of Chile.  We will be viewing the Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown episode focusing on Chile and a couple of other short videos, one on the Chorrillana and another on Chilean wines.

Assignment:

Discussion Board Entry 2 (Or you can make this a Blog Post if you prefer):
Watch the Anthony Bourdain episode linked above and one of the other two videos.
For this assignment describe what you found surprising about the food and drinks that you learned about in the videos. Explain what foods and/or drinks you look forward to trying in Chile and which ones you are fairly certain you will not try and why.  Describe where you are willing to venture outside your comfort zone food-wise and where your limits are. Due date 12/20

First Assignments

With just 9 days before we leave we have to hit the ground running in terms of our coursework. There's a lot of work to do this week, but that is because we want to be well-prepared for experiences once we arrive in Santiago. Some of the most important parts of our course will happen in this week before we leave. By the end of the day on Monday please complete the following assignments. Further explanation of each topic and the links to videos and readings are available in the Course Sections area of this blog.

For the Discussion board you are responsible both for posting your own entry and for responding in a thoughtful way to one of your peers' entries.

Remember that the quiz is open-book!

I'm looking forward to reading your first blog posts! Don't forget to send me the links so that I can add them to the course blog.

Body Language and Slang Assignment:

View at least two of the videos posted in this section.

Blog entry #1: For this assignment, create your blog site and make your first post about your pre-departure feelings. Be sure to include your feelings about traveling to a country where you either do not speak the language or do not speak the language fluently.  Include also some reaction to the videos that you viewed on the language of Chile. Due date 12/19

Geography Assignment

Moodle Discussion Board Entry 1For this assignment, explain which of the different geographical regions that Isabel Allende describes in "Country of Longitudinal Essences" most appealing to you personally and why. Due date 12/19

Open-book quiz: For this topic, you are also required to complete an open-book quiz on Moodle on the Moon Travel reading you were given at our pre-departure meeting . Due date 12/19
